North Country agencies are meeting today at SUNY Canton CREST to discuss strategies for reaching contractors about the importance of home health issues related to work practices, such as lead safe work practice.  The main focus North Country Partners for Safe Jobs and Healthy Homes is to reduce hazardous exposures associated with health problems both for workers and for the people who live in the homes on which they are working.

Arthur Garno, Director of CREST will present on the programs offered to contractors to expand their skills for the trade.  Jamie Rogers, Director of the Energy Dept of ANCA will present ways for people to get free home health assessments that generate recommendations for both improved energy efficiency and improved health of the inhabitants   Relani Prudhomme, Outreach and Education Coordinator for OHCC of the North Country, will give a brief overview of a Social Marketing approach to reaching workers that has been successful in the agricultural sector in improving health and safety behaviors on the job.

Strategic planning for upcoming outreach campaigns will ensue. This safe jobs and healthy homes coalition is planning outreach campaigns to reach contractors and the general public in Gouverneur this summer about lead and other home and home renovation-related health and safety issues, in an effort to improve health outcomes for residents.  Gouverneur was selected for the pilot project, due to recent evidence of elevated blood lead levels in the Gouverneur residents in the 1-5 age range.
